BOTOX – Anti Wrinkle Injections

How does it work?
Botox is Botulinum Toxin. It works by reversibly weakening the muscles of the facial skin.  Once muscles are weakened, their pull is relaxed and the skin flattens out.  Wrinkles are removed naturally.
For well over 20 years much higher doses of Botox have been used safely and effectively to neuromuscular disorders.  It has been extended to removing crow’s feet, forehead lines, especially frown lines,  and above lips to cause a peak. More recently it has been used to treat smoker’s lines, marionette lines, nasal flares, bunny lines and neckbands and can also be used in conjunction with Restylane, Juvederm, Esthelis  today’s common injectable dermal fillers.

What can I expect during and after treatment?
Botox needs to be prepared fresh and has a little shelf life of only 1 day. The injection causes local stinging for about 30 seconds, after which it is completely painless.  Occasionally there may be bruising or swelling.
Following treatment patients are encouraged to exercise the muscles that have been injected for 3-4 hours. You must not touch or massage the area for 12 hours, as this will encourage the Botox to spread to other areas and produce unwanted side effects. Botox can take up to 7 days to take effect.

How long does it last?
Flattening of the wrinkles will last usually for 3 months. When the Botox starts to wear off, you will notice the return of your wrinkles, although frequently they are not as deep.  At that time you may have another injection. Generally with each successive treatment, a longer duration of action can be expected as the muscles become weaker.

Are there any complications?
Complications are rare but can occur. Apart from a little bruising and swelling, this in itself will only last for a short period time.

Following treatment, patients must:
•    Remain up right for 4 hours, which means no lying down for a rest!!!
•    Resist touching or massaging the treated area for 12 hours as this may spread the Botox into unwanted areas.
•    No Alcohol for 4 hours.
•    Avoid physical exercise for 12 hours.
