History - Before lasers

From the time of the pharaohs, unwanted hair has been a problem. Upper class Egyptian men and women were not allowed to have visible hair other than on there heads, so they developed a technique of sugaring, which is a type of waxing. This method has persisted until the modern day and is quiet painful.

Fortunately in the latest decade, Lasers have been developed for "Permanent Hair Reduction."

Unlike the inexpensive and inferior quality equipment of IPL machines used in beauty salons and spas, we use only Class 3B Medical Grade IPL and a Class 4 Medical Laser. Which enables us to achieve  far superior results. Which are totally and utterly incomparable to other types of machines that you may have already tried and had little or no results with!

How does this method differ from electrolysis and other methods?
Alternative method such as waxing, plucking, shaving, bleaching and use of depilatory creams are satisfactory as temporary measures. The only other method for Permanent Hair Reduction is Electrolysis, using heat, generally electrically, conducted via a fine wire or needle to penetrate the skin down into the hair follicle. Only one hair at a time can be treated by this method, making it extremely tedious, requiring many visits to achieve any significant removal. When using the laser hand piece it is compressed against the skin and treats hundreds of hairs at the one time. Both methods are based on the principle of "photo thermolysis" where the hair shaft is heated, thereby cutting off the blood supply to the root of the hair as a permanent measure.

What causes excess or unwanted hair?
Certain medical conditions can influence the growth of excess or unwanted hair.  It can be hereditary or affected by age, ethnic background, medications, hormonal levels and body site.  Any of these factors can also contribute to the length, coarseness and extent of facial and body hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the unique Aurora ELOS remove hair?
The level of energy used during the treatment will be determined by a test patch, according to the colour of your skin and hair.

The Aurora ELOS (Intense Pulsed Light System) hand piece is held against the skin and the optical energy is converted into heat.  The Aurora ELOS’ optical and electrical energies (680-980 nanometres) is pulsed or “turned on” for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to heat the hair shaft, disabling the root of the hair, killing the hair follicle, but not long enough to cause excess heat.

What are the benefits of using the Aurora ELOS for hair removal?
The Aurora ELOS simultaneously delivers two types of energy; light (Optical or Intense Pulse Light) and electrical RF (Radio Frequency) to the hair. We use the Aurora ELOS to treat the paler hair colours of blonde, white and strawberry blonde or pale gray where there is too little pigmentation or melanin in the hair.  This unique combination allows the treatment of all skin types and hair colours without compromising safety or efficiency.  With this energy there are less risks as each pulse can be delivered for a longer period than a standard inexpensive Intense Pulse Light system.

After conducting our own in depth research and clinical trials, this state of the art medical grade IPL machine has been carefully selected.  We can now offer you the very latest equipment for the most effective results.

How many treatments will I require and when should the hair be treated?
Hair growths in 3 cycles the anagen or active growth stage, the catagen or transition stage and the telogen or resting stage. During the treatment, only hair follicles in the active growth phase are affected. Hairs that have been treated will then be expelled after a couple of weeks. Other hair that is in the resting phase will then be synchronised into growing and be treated on subsequent visit.

Multiple treatments are required to reduce or remove the hair and the number can vary from person to person. The hair you start with in any given area of the body only represents 20% of the hair that you have in total and the interval between treatments will depend on the laser used and the area of the body.

Your laser technician will work with you to develop the treatment program that best suits your hair removal needs.

How long will it take?
The amount of time needed depends on the size of the area to be treated by the Intense Pulse Light system. This can vary from person to person depending on body size and spread of the hair. While the Aurora ELOS may take roughly twice as long as and may require double the number of treatments, it is the only method effectively reducing pale hair colours.

What happens after treatment?
Within 10 to 20 minutes of the treatment, the reaction is not unlike that of waxing and the treated area may become slightly pink and puffy. This reaction normally subsides very quickly. You can virtually return to your regular activities immediately and usually within ½ to 48 hours the area returns to normal.  It is important to remember that the area treated will be likened to mild sunburn and should be treated gently, as per our printed post treatment instructions.

We do not treat pregnant women or clients who have a pace maker implanted with the Aurora ELOS Intense Pulse light system (for light hair), although there is not research to confirm that problems may occurs – it is purely our clinic policy.

Does it hurt?
We prefer to have an anaesthetic cream applied ½ hour before treatment, in order to increase your comfort. Our friendly staff  prepare you for your treatment – we don’t require you to do anything. It is important that we see the extent of the hair that we are going to treat.

What are the risks and complications?
Laser hair removal treatments are performed by trained and licensed technicians in a professional and controlled environment, which has government accreditation. The level of energy selected will be determined and monitored by a series of careful test patches according to the colour of your skin and the hair type with each technology.

Due to these conditions, most risks are eliminated and the complications are extremely rare, if clients adhere to our instructions.

Throughout the treatment program, all clients are advised to cease sunbathing, the use of solariums and fake tan.  It is necessary for clients to wear adequate sunscreen on the area treated because laser targets not only the pigment in the hair but also in the skin.  After treatment the skin is light sensitive for 2 weeks.  An anti inflammatory, soothing antiseptic and anaesthetic “all in one” cream is applied to the treated area after the treatment to soothe and cool the skin.

Is it permanent?
We are legally allowed to advertise that, our lasers have been cleared by the American FDA and the Australia TGA for “Permanent Hair Reduction” for women, men, teenagers and children. Permanent hair reduction is defined as a long-term stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment regime.
